Post-dating Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth by nearly three decades, predating the attainment of the North Pole by nearly two: an Arctic expedition results in the discovery that the North Pole is a huge gulf in the sea, through which the hero's ship descends to find an interior planet within the earth, ruled by kings and mystical goddesses.
