Frontispiece engraving: portrait of Robert, with added hand-tinting (not original). Page edges mostly sharp; slight chipping to frontis., p. 31-36 (not affecting text). Foxing slight to moderate, last two pages the most. Title page continued: "..Comprising An Account of His Birth, Parentage, Sufferings, and providential escape from unjust and cruel Bondage in early life -- and his reasons for becoming a Recluse." Robert, born in Princeton NJ into slavery, of an African mother and an English gentleman father, and raised on the estate of John Voorhis in Georgetown, District of Columbia. He is cheated of his promised purchased freedom by a monstrous swindler, taken from his family and sold as a slave in Charleston.
