Mary Martha Sherwood, 1775-1851: Prolific children's author of evangelical tales most with some element of the macabre, her most popular creations began with 'History of Susan Gray' 1802. Later works include 'Little Hery and his bearer' 1814, 'History of the Fairchild Family' 1818, and 'Lady of the Manor' 1825 interpreted as moral lessons for the upper ranks of young females.
