Frontispiece portrait: engraving.  Ms. Eldridge's father was a freeman who fought in the Revolution, the son of an African taken into slavery from Zaire; her mother was Narragansett. This book was published by her friends and employers in Providence to help Elleanor replace the loss of her property, taken unfairly by creditors. Appendix contains further testamonials and poems. (The last four pages may have been reproduced and sewn in: the paper is markedly without foxing.)
