Red and Black; A Story of Provincial France

New York: Brentano's, 1898. Cloth. 8vo. 439 pp. Red and black diagonal striped cloth with gilt titling. Lacking dust jacket. Spine cloth slightly darkened, very faint scuffing and soiling to boards. Corners and spine ends lightly bumped. Soiling to text block edges. Hinges cracked, repaired, and holding firm. Faint foxing and soiling to eps, previous owner's bookplate to ffep. Text block lightly toned, otherwise clean. Early English translation by Charles Tergie, following that of E.P. Robins published the same year. Published in 1830 as "Le Rouge et le Noir", this romantic novel of French aristocracy failed to gain immediate popularity, the first English translations published more than 50 years after the author's death. This early American edition appears to be scarce. Very Good. Item #165526
